This is tutorial on how to use very cheap and popular pulse heart rate sensor. But is this sensor worth? Let’s try with an arduino.
You can buy the devices using links below. (Affiliate links).
Wiring diagram
Let’s start with wiring.. Hook the sensor to arduino just like this.
Pulse Heart Rate Sensor Arduino Code
Now open arduino IDE and copy this code. Or you can just use example from arduino IDE. It’s called AnalogReadSerial.
/* AnalogReadSerial Reads an analog input on pin 0, prints the result to the Serial Monitor. Graphical representation is available using Serial Plotter (Tools > Serial Plotter menu). Attach the center pin of a potentiometer to pin A0, and the outside pins to +5V and ground. This example code is in the public domain. http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/AnalogReadSerial */ // the setup routine runs once when you press reset: void setup() { // initialize serial communication at 9600 bits per second: Serial.begin(9600); } // the loop routine runs over and over again forever: void loop() { // read the input on analog pin 0: int sensorValue = analogRead(A0); // print out the value you read: Serial.println(sensorValue); delay(1); // delay in between reads for stability }
Open the Serial Plotter. And you should see the pulse when you put the finger on sensor. Now determine the threshold. I use 516 as upper threshold and 510 for lower threshold. You can use different value.
This is the sketch to count the beats using the threshold I mention above.
v/*Easy Pulse Heartbeat counter * by miliohm.com */ boolean countStatus; int beat, bpm; unsigned long millisBefore; // the setup routine runs once when you press reset: void setup() { // initialize serial communication at 9600 bits per second: Serial.begin(9600); } // the loop routine runs over and over again forever: void loop() { // read the input on analog pin 0: int sensorValue = analogRead(A0); // print out the value you read: //Serial.println(sensorValue); if (countStatus == 0) { if (sensorValue > 516) { countStatus = 1; beat++; Serial.println("Beat Detected!"); Serial.print("Beat : "); Serial.println(beat); } } else{ if (sensorValue < 510) { countStatus = 0; } } if (millis()-millisBefore>15000){ bpm=beat*4; beat=0; Serial.print("BPM : "); Serial.println(bpm); millisBefore=millis(); } delay(1); // delay in between reads for stability }
Adding a OLED display to display the BPM value and animation
If you need detailed tutorial on how to use the OLED display. You can find it here.
